Winneshiek Medical Center is offering a blood glucose (blood sugar) check on Tuesday, October 22, from 7:00 – 9:30am at no charge to participants. Open to all members of the community, the screening aims to promote diabetes awareness and prevention. The screening will be located in the lower level conference room at Winneshiek Medical Center. Please enter through the east entrance, door E1. For an accurate glucose reading, fasting is preferred. Community members who complete the screening can enjoy a complimentary, homemade omelet in the WMC cafeteria, courtesy of the WMC Foundation.
Along with a free blood glucose reading, the Winneshiek Medical Center diabetes education team will offer blood pressure checks, take waist circumference measurements, guide participants through the diabetes education experience and offer support to those with further questions or needs. Jean Irvin, RN, BSN, and certified diabetes educator says, “Diabetes can be prevented or managed when patients begin to include healthy food choices and regular physical activity in their daily lives. The diabetes education program at Winneshiek Medical Center helps patients make positive decisions for their health and supports them as they face the challenges of diabetes.”
What’s my risk?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate:
- 2 out of every 5 Americans are expected to develop type 3 diabetes
- 30.3 million Americans have diabetes and 1 in 4 don’t know it
- More than 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes
However, they report that 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, along with 5-10% reduction in body weight and eating a healthy diet, can decrease the development of diabetes by 58%.
Winneshiek Medical Center urges community members to take advantage of this free screening opportunity to learn more about diabetes and the steps to prevent it. For more information about the screening, please call Winneshiek Medical Center at 563-382-2911 or visit www.winmedical.org/classes-and-events.
