Event Details

The DPL Happy Hour Book Club will meet at RUBAIYAT on Wed. June 5th at 5:15 p.m. to discuss Caroline Van Hemert’s “The Sun Is a Compass: A 4,000-Mile Journey into the Alaskan Wilds.” Multiple copies available at the library.

During graduate school, ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert began to feel stifled in the sterile environment of the lab. Worried that she was losing her passion for the scientific research she once loved, she and her husband set off in March of 2012 on a 4,000-mile journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic, traveling by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe.
