 Why Sing?

We gather to build friendship though singing. We gather to create an island of sanity, a place of belonging. We gather to make something bigger than any one of us. We gather to learn a common body of simple songs that we can carry with us into our everyday lives. Through group singing we experience joy, a sense of success, and an expression of shared meaning. We deepen our sense of communion with each other and a sense of sanctuary for all our spirits. Join us to sing, socialize, and relax – because singing is too important to leave to the professionals!

 When will we meet?

We’ll meet for 6 Wednesdays in Decorah from 4-5:00, beginning Oct. 9. At the end of the 6 weeks there will be an optional and informal concert/singalong for friends and family.

Do I have to know how to read music, or be a trained singer?

Heavens, no! We will learn all of our songs in a simple call-and-echo manner. You’ll be singing along before you even know it. Whether you’ve never sung in a group or have performed in front of masses, you’ll feel how well you belong here.

What kinds of songs will we sing?

We’ll  sing songs that celebrate love, diversity, power, the rhythms of the year, and the circle of life. We’ll sing songs for times when comfort is needed, and songs that remind us of our ancestors. We’ll sing songs to give us courage in our work tend the world. We’ll sing songs from home and songs from afar, and silly songs–all songs that you can take home and sing the rest of your life. Want to hear some examples of the kinds of songs we’ll sing?  Here’s one,  Here’s another, and here’s one more.

*Any woman or girl is welcome!

Come alone, bring a friend, bring a daughter or a neighbor. Anyone who identifies as a woman or girl is welcome.  If you are the mother of a young boy and would like to bring him along, please do. Youngest ones might like to play quietly in the room, or sit on laps.

 What ages will we be?

Any and all! This is a chance to make intergenerational friendships. Babies and very young children are welcome too.

 Is there a fee?

A one-time donation is asked at the beginning, on sliding scale of $20-$60.  Pay as feels affordable and generous to you. For children, pay anything

What if I’m not sure? Can I just come give it a try?

Of course!

Do I need to commit to all 6 times?

We hope you’ll find it irresistible, and it will be easiest for us to build our songs when most people come most of the time. However, we know that other things come up and that’s ok.

 Who is leading this group?

Liz Rog is in love with the people, land, and creatures of Northeast Iowa and lives to sing with others in this shared home. Liz  believes that everyone can sing and that doing it together is a wonderful way to restore our sense of belonging and connection in community.

Guest leaders will also share songs.

Come, join the growing global community movement that is knitting the world together through song.

Ready? sign up here!

Thank you!
