Event Details

Come to the NE Iowa Peace & Justice Center Saturdays in December to make a special kind of holiday greeting card.

Your “Tender Torn Card (TTC) for These Times” will be fashioned completely out of discarded, re-purposed materials. No need to come up with a design, we have that figured out for you, including the beautiful Diane Ackerman poem for the inside cover.

In the rest of the space, search your heart for what you could do to build a more life-sustaining society, and then invite the receiver of your TTC card to join you.

For example, you might offer,

“Dear Friend:

– I’m going to make a commitment to buy all of our food for the coming year locally, and eat seasonally, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels in shipping AND supporting local growers and resiliency.”

– I plan to take the money I would have spent on purchased coffee for a month and send it to (name of your favorite non-profit).”

– I plan to begin my search now for a more fuel efficient car, or invest in a bicycle to take me to work, or make a serious attempt to carpool more, or……”

– I am committing to writing 1 letter/week to a legislator who is not currently supporting The Green New Deal.”

Research has shown that when people make some sort of public commitment to do something, they tend to stick with it, so even as you are spreading encouragement around to friends and neighbors, you are committing your intentions to yourself, holding to your word.

Join Heidi Swets, board member here at NEIPJC. Instruction & supplies provided.
