Trainee-Pharmacy Technician-Full Time                                                                (On-the-Job Training provided) $12.50/Hour

Pharmacy Technician Trainee candidates must be open to a new career as a Pharmacy Technician. On-the-job training provided. Then, within one year must achieve certification via the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).


Performs the functions of prescription data entry, insurance processing, filling prescriptions using the RxSafe system, and using POS (point of sale) for checkout. The technician is trained to perform their work with quality and to deliver a positive patient experience, including answering the phones, ordering pharmacy supplies and basic patient support functions. The technician will devote his/her energies to assure patients have a positive pharmacy experience at Donlon Pharmacy.

Required: High School graduation or GED or equivalent. Previous customer service experience is preferred, but not required. NO PREVIOUS PHARMACY EXPERIENCE REQUIRED; on the job training is provided for the right candidate.


Understanding of retail store operations and holding him/herself to a high standard of quality. Excellent customer service and possesses integrity and trustworthiness. Ability to respond to common inquiries or requests from patients, clinics, and other staff members. Excellent phone skills and able to effectively communicate in English, verbally and in writing. Ability to create and maintain excellent customer and peer staff relationships. Able to take ownership for assigned and patient generated tasks and see them through to completion. Possesses strong interpersonal skills to ensure teamwork and task completion as well as work with diverse personalities. Organized individual who is quality and results oriented with the ability to understand and balance all business considerations. Able to maintain confidentiality to ensure HIPAA compliance regarding protected health information (PHI).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while completing other duties and responsibilities.


The employee must have a full range of body movements including the use of his/her hands to finger, handle, and feel objects such as computer equipment, and other office equipment. The ability to bend the body, to reach for objects, and to crouch when needed are also required.


The employee must have command of: sight, hearing, and touch. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. These vision requirements in each area must be sufficient to shift in focus from computer screens to close visualization of paper forms.


The employee must have the ability to lift twenty-five (25) lbs.


This position will be working indoors in a smoke-free office environment.


Initial registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee for up to 12 months. Upon successfully passing the PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) exam, must maintain current registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.


Must be available to work until regular 6:00 PM close, Saturdays as scheduled, and weekly scheduled staff meetings.


Performs the basic functions of a pharmacy technician as assigned: Input at workstation: Initial patient contact and processing of basic insurance claims for prescriptions, including working to resolve insurance rejections or other problems, with aid of other technicians as needed. RxSafe system: Accurately filling and labeling prescriptions using RxSafe system, answering inbound phone calls, including timely answering, courteous and efficient communication, and directing the caller to appropriate staff member. Learn and use the POS (Point of Sale) system and similar pharmacy software to assure accurate and timely fulfillment of prescription requests.
