Job Type: Full Time

The City of Decorah is accepting applications for the position of Parks and Facilities Assistant.  Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent with an associates degree in natural resource management, conservation, construction or a related field preferred.  The candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. The candidate must possess or obtain a class B CDL with air brake endorsement, and a commercial pesticide applicator license within six months of hiring date.  Position subject to post-offer physical examination including drug testing, background check and motor vehicle records check.  Competitive benefit package offered.  Applications and complete job description may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office, Decorah Municipal Center, 400 Claiborne Drive or online at www.decorahia.org.

Winter Walkers

Decorah Parks and Recreation invites the community to join our Winter Walkers program beginning Wednesday, January 4th! Winter Walkers is a fun way for folks of all ages to stay active, spend time outside, and stay motivated during the winter when we are oftentimes less likely to bundle up and head outdoors. The aim of this program is to get moving every day, so feel free to participate as a walker, runner, biker, or whatever keeps you moving!

Wayside Ice Rink and Warming House

The ice rink is open for season. The ice rink is always open for skating throughout the winter except when the ‘Stay Off Ice’ sign is posted. Please obey signage at the rink while staff continue flooding and prep for daily use. The Wayside Warming House is open and staffed throughout the season during the hours specified below.

New Year’s Eve Bash

We are bringing back the New Year’s Eve Bash! The Decorah Parks and Recreation Department invites the community to attend the 25th Annual New Year’s Eve Bash sponsored by Decorah Bank & Trust and Gundersen Health System!  This free family friendly event will be held Saturday, December 31, 5:00-9:00pm, in the Luther College Regents Center. The evening includes open swimming, basketball, tennis, pickleball, a Bouncy House for the little ones, and more.  Concession items including pizza, popcorn, water and Gatorade will be available for purchase.  Please enter the Luther College Regents Center using the circle drive entrance on the west side of the building. No registration required, just show up!

Winter Trails & Recreation Information

Cross Country Skiing

Park staff attempted to roll trails, but due to warm conditions and sticky snow the effort was paused. Staff will attempt to roll again if temperatures drop.

Snowshoeing

Decorah Parks & Recreation encourages those snowshoeing to use the multi-use trail in Carlson Park, the Decorah Community Prairie, and the trails in Van Peenen. Please be courteous of skiers and stay off the groomed ski trails.

Mountain Biking

Conditions are not yet fit to groom mountain bike trails for winter riding.

Plowed Walking Routes

Staff will plow routes for walking throughout the winter season.

  • Route #1: Starting at 5th Ave Bridge, travel south along bike trail to Pulpit Rock Campground. Pulpit Rock Campground will be plowed for pedestrians to walk loops around the campground and can return to 5th Ave bridge via the bike trail.
  • Route #2: Trout Run Trail is plowed from the intersection of Commerce Drive and Montgomery Street to Wellington Place in Freeport. Pedestrians can park in the parking lot by bowstring bridge or in the northwest corner of the Walmart Parking lot.

Ice Skating Rink

Conditions are not yet favorable for flooding the ice rink. We will update as conditions become more favorable.
