Philosophy Colloquium: Ana López Romero ‘19

Conscience, the capacity to judge the rightness or wrongness of one’s own actions is typically thought of as a capacity that evaluates past and future actions. Most accounts ignore the possibility of judgements of conscience for actions in progress. In this talk, López Romero uses action-theoretical resources from the philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe to argue for an account of conscience for actions in progress. In other words, in this talk she argues that sometimes, we learn about the goodness of what we do, as we do it.
Ana López Romero (Luther alumna ’19) is a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are at the intersection of ethics and action theory, with a special interest in the work of Elizabeth Anscombe.
