RAD Basic Physical Defense Class for Women

In Spring 2026, Dr. Christian Schlaerth, Associate Professor of Sociology at Luther College, received a grant from the Winneshiek County Community Fund to start is offering RAD (Rape.Agression.Defense) classes this semester, open to women in the community (not limited to Winneshiek County).

RAD Basic Physical Defense for Women is a 9 hour course that consists of 3/3 hours sessions which will cover book work and physical movements.  The course is open to women of all ages.  Those who complete the course receive a manual which is your “ticket” to lifetime learning: you can re-take the BPD course anywhere it is offered, and by any RAD instructor for the rest of your life!  

The cost for the course for community members is $25, which covers the cost of the manual.  Interested participants can pay via check (made out to Luther College and sent to Dr. Schlaerth at 700 College Dr., Decorah, IA 52101), cash, Venmo, and Zelle (if paying with Venmo or Zelle, please contact Dr. Schlaerth directly via email at schlch02@luther.edu or phone at (563) 387-1280).  You will not be considered registered until payment (or arrangement for payment) has been confirmed.

Classes will be held at Luther College in Main 112 on Saturdays from 9am-12pm.  Space is limited to 16 students, and admittance will be on a first paid/first come basis.  If the course fills up and with sufficient interest, another round of courses can be offered (either on the Sundays of the weekends list, or in November/December).  Participants should wear active clothing and sneakers (some light physical activity is to be expected).
