Event Details

Karla Bloem, Executive Director of the International Owl Center in Houston, Minnesota, and a 1994 graduate of Luther College will talk about a two-decades-long in-depth vocal study of over 25 captive and wild Great Horned Owls at this year’s Friends of the Decorah Public Library annual meeting on Monday, April 29th at Convergence CiderWorks, with the public welcome.  Using video and audio clips of owl vocalizations and what they mean, Karla will help attendees experience owl dating, divorce, territorial defense and more.

When Karla gave the presentation to the St. Paul Audubon Society, a board member said of the talk, “The Great Horned Owl Real-life Soap Opera is simply one of the best presentations we have ever had and I absolutely recommend it.  Karla is a delightful speaker and her story about Alice and the other Great Horned Owls was entertaining, fascinating, funny, and educational.  Karla is a great storyteller and has an amazing ability to hear owl calls and understand what all the hooting is about!  Her videos and audio recordings bring it all to life and make the story easy to follow.”

The presentation at Decorah’s Convergence CiderWorks begins at 7 p.m., with doors open at 6:30 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served with drinks available for purchase.  Handicapped parking is available in the lot on the east side of Convergence CiderWorks.
