WinnMed Hospice ride and breakfast set for June 25

The annual WinnMed Hospice Memorial Ride is set for Sunday, June 25.  The event will begin on the WinnMed campus in Decorah with a free-will donation breakfast, and will be held rain or shine.

The 2023 event will support new specialty therapies for hospice patients: Pet Therapy, Music Therapy, Massage Therapy and Spiritual Counseling.

“There are many benefits to the complimentary therapies provided through WinnMed hospice,” says Nancy Haberichter, director of WinnMed Hospice.  “For hospice patients dealing with both physical and emotional pain and anxiety, the therapies can provide positive changes in mood, relaxation, peace and comfort. They reduce anxiety and stress and bring on more social interaction with caregivers and families. These therapies inevitably bring a smile to the faces of patients, which in turn, is a gift to both hospice staff as well as to families.”

Norskkor performs at the 2023 Iowa Choral Showcase

June 13, 2023

The choir on stage, dressed in black robes with white collars.

Norskkor performs at the 2023 Iowa Choral Showcase.

Norskkor, Luther College’s choral ensemble for first-year tenor and bass singers, was selected to perform at the 2023 Iowa Choral Showcase on Wednesday, April 26. The annual showcase event, which features choral groups from across the state, took place at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Norskkor is the only college choir that was selected to perform at the showcase.

Organized by the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Iowa Choral Showcase is chaired by Jason Rausch, choir director at Decorah High School.

The Iowa Choral Showcase has a unique selection process among choral conventions. At many other similar events, choirs are selected based on their recordings from the previous three years. The Iowa Choral Showcase, however, makes its decisions based on recorded performances from the current academic year.

Norskkor is a first-year choral ensemble. It is open to students at all levels, whether they have previously sung in choirs or not. It boasts members from various academic majors and musical backgrounds.

Iowa Choral Showcase audition recordings were due in January 2023, representing only one semester’s worth of choral work together for the Norskkor ensemble.

“Norskkor’s Iowa Choral Showcase selection recognizes the singers’ merit, not the school’s reputation,” said Mark Potvin, Norskkor director. “The event is unique in that the students were selected based on their scholastic skill, artistic intuition, work ethic and sense of community, making it the perfect way to acknowledge their achievements,” said Potvin.

Norskkor member Samuel Scheffler, Luther class of 2026, said, “It felt incredible to attend the Choral Showcase with all my friends. I know it is cliché, but Norskkor is family. We are a very tight-knit group that works hard. Only a few first-year groups at the collegiate level get to travel together, so I am grateful for this opportunity to come along for Norskkor.”

During the trip to Cedar Rapids, Norskkor also performed at First Lutheran Church, attracting an audience of approximately 150 listeners.

Scheffler added, “Through this Showcase, Norskkor honed our performance skills and spread the word of Luther choirs to those on the college search. I have had a great experience in the Luther choral program, and displaying that to people searching for such a collegiate choral experience feels fantastic.”

“It is an honor for Norskkor to be selected for the Iowa Choral Showcase,” Potvin said. “We were excited to share our music with the community and represent Luther College on such a grand stage.”

Altfillisch Project Given Statewide Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Decorah Historic Preservation Commission

Decorah Altfillisch Project Given Statewide Award

Decorah, IA (June 12, 2023) — The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission’s Charles Altfillisch project won a “Preservation at its Best” award at the “Preserve Iowa Summit” in Sioux City, IA, June 1-3, 2023.

The “Special Project” award citation cited “the ambitious volunteer effort that resulted in extensive online resources,” including a biography, details on sixty properties organized into four tours, and information on other Altfillisch and misattributed non-Altfillisch properties. The award was presented by the statewide non-profit Preservation Iowa.

Decorah Commission member Judy van der Linden noted, “Our small printed brochure, available at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, leads to city website materials that provide an affordable format for preserving the rich historical information gathered by the Commission’s seven members.”

Decorah Hotel/Motel taxes and city historic preservation funds covered the project’s modest cost. Chamber of Commerce personnel Jessica Rilling and Amanda Streeper provided design, layout, and project oversight. City engineer Jeremy Bril created the maps. IROC Web Design Services of Calmar formatted the internet materials.

The “Preserve Iowa Summit,” presented annually by the Department of Cultural Affairs State Historic Preservation Office, is the premier statewide conference for historic preservation. More than 220 architects, developers, historic preservation professionals, government officials and others attended the three-day event.

Decorah Commission members Hayley Jackson and Mark Z. Muggli also presented a conference session on “A Big Architect in a Small Town: Charles Altfillisch in Decorah.” They outlined the challenges and opportunities in a project conceived and executed by volunteer members, rather than professional consultants.

At the end of the Jackson and Muggli presentation, Preservation Iowa vice-president Laura Carstens said, “Now you know why we presented this project with an award.”

The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission is a state-certified city board established in 2007 to promote the public’s educational and economic welfare through the recognition of historic sites. Contact: historicpreservation@decorahia.org.

Data Bike to Provide Valuable Bike Trail Information

This week, Winneshiek County Conservation will be using the Iowa Data Bike to collect and record trail conditions on the county’s bike trails.  The Data Bike is an electric bike equipped with sensors to read and record pavement roughness, cracks, bumps, and much more.  In addition, the project will record trail conditions with photos using a GoPro Hero5 camera and capture Google Street View images using a GoPro Max 360 camera. This information will be used to create targeted maintenance strategies and to secure grant funding for trail maintenance and repairs.

Local resident, Ray Torresdal, has volunteered to operate the Data Bike, riding more than 30 miles of the Prairie Farmer Recreational Trail, Trout Run Trail, and Freeport Trail in both directions.  Ray is an avid cyclist who volunteers on the Trails of Winneshiek 28E Committee and served ten years as the Winneshiek County Conservation Board Chair during the construction and paving of these trails. Ray reminds all of us of the importance of the trails, saying “One of the less recognized benefits of our trail system is the improved quality of life it affords our community as people utilize the trails, parks, and recreation areas for both their physical and mental health and well-being.”

Give Ray a wave if you see him on the trails and then allow him some space to ensure he can collect accurate data!

If you would like to learn more about the Iowa Data Bike, visit https://dmampo.org/data-bike/. To learn more about our county trail system and to find trail maps, visit https://www.winneshiekwild.com/park-trail
