Winter Program Registration begins November 15

Decorah Parks and Recreation fall program begins Tuesday, November 15. Registration can be completed online or in the Park-Rec Office. 

The following programs will be offered by Decorah Parks & Recreation in November, December, January and February. A complete list of programs and our registration form can also be viewed in our winter brochure.

Turkey Trot – Free event! Run or walk the 5k or 1-mile loop that we have marked out in the Decorah Community Prairie anytime Thursday, November 24 thru Sunday, November 27. Submit your name using the form available Nov 24-27 at https://parks.decorahia.org and send a photo of you completing your turkey trot to decorahrec@gmail.com to be entered in a drawing to win a prize! This can be a fun challenge for individuals or for your entire household. The Decorah Community Prairie is located at the south end of Ohio Street (over the levy) in Decorah.

Biddy Basketball  is open to children ages 3 thru 6. This program meets in the Carrie Lee Elementary Gym on Saturday mornings, January 21 thru February 11. Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of basketball and enjoy actual team competition. Teams are grouped according to age and game rules are modified to accommodate the lower ages and skill levels. Small baskets, balls and fun teaching techniques are used with special emphasis on sportsmanship. Each Saturday consists of a skills session followed by a game. Registration is due Wednesday, January 4.

Outdoor Adventures is open to students in Kindergarten thru 2nd grade. This program meets after school Thursdays, January 5 thru January 26. Each week will include a different activity to show off your creativity including building with Legos, arts and crafts, painting, outdoor winter games and more. Students will meet immediately after school in the John Cline Gym and this program will run 3:15 to 4:15 pm. Registration due Tuesday, January 3.

Adult Recreational Volleyball– A free drop in activity! Recreational volleyball is held in the Carrie Lee Elementary Gym (enter east doors off of Winnebago Street) on Tuesdays, January 31 thru March 28 from 7:30 to 10:00 pm. A schedule is posted in the gym and online.

Fly Fishing Workshop – Free, open – house event! The Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Decorah Parks & Recreation, and Winneshiek County Conservation will co-host this workshop on Saturday, February 4th from 10:00 am to noon in the Decorah High School Gym. Local casting instructors will discuss equipment, demonstrate basic casts, and work with participants on their fly casting skills. Participants can watch experts and learn how to tie their favorite flies. This workshop is free and open to anglers of all ages and levels of experience. This is a free event—no registration required—just show up!

Middle School Bowling is open to 5th thru 8th grade students. This program is held at Kingpin Entertainment Center on Saturdays, January 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 10:30 to 11:45 am. Participants will receive instruction from members of the High School Bowling team and will bowl one to two games during each class. Registration due Friday, January 5.

Turkey Shoot – Tues, Nov 8

The 40th Annual Decorah Park-Rec. Turkey Shoot will be held in the Decorah High School Main Gym on Tuesday, November 8, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. In this fun family event, a parent and child team up, combine their ages to determine their competition bracket, and each shoot 10 free throws in an attempt to win a certificate for a free turkey. In addition, all teams are eligible for a prize drawing. Winning teams will be posted on the Park-Rec. website and Facebook page by 5:00 pm Wednesday, November 9.  This is a free activity, no need to register, just show up!  This event is sponsored by Deco Products Company, The Family Table Restaurant, Fareway, Gundersen Health System, T-Bocks Sports Bar & Grill, and Total Tree Care.

Middle School Dodgeball Tournament – Decorah Park & Recreation Department

Interested participants are responsible for creating their own teams.  Tournament rules, team entry forms and participant waivers can be found online, or can be picked up in the  Middle School office or the Decorah Park-Rec Office.  Teams must turn in rosters, waiver forms and payment to the Park-Rec office by Friday, October 28.

Outdoor drop-in pickleball play at the City of Decorah tennis courts will continue during the times listed below as long as weather permits.

Tuesdays: 7:00pm-9:00pm

Thursdays: 7:00pm-9:00pm

Sundays: 3:00pm-5:00pm

Indoor Pickleball Play

Beginning Friday, October 14, 2022 drop-in pickleball play will be held in the North Gym of the Regents Center at Luther College.  Pickleball is a drop in activity open to individuals of all ages and abilities, but all individuals must have a Luther College Community Pass.

Mondays: 10:30am-12:30pm

Tuesdays: 9:00am-11:00am

Wednesdays: 10:30am-12:30pm

Thursdays: 9:00am-11:00am

Decorah Gear Exchange Oct 8-9

Save the Dates! Decorah Gear Exchange to be held October 8-9, 2022

Six local businesses and organizations are partnering together this fall to bring a new event to the area, The Decorah Gear Exchange. Held October 8-9 at Carl Selland Wayside Park in Decorah, this event will allow individuals to sell and/or buy new or gently used outdoor gear such as kayaks, canoes, tents, backpacks, fishing gear, bicycles, skis, lifejackets, car racks, camp stoves, and more! To note: No firearms or weapons will be accepted.  Proceeds will benefit Decorah Parks and Recreation, further expanding recreational opportunities in the Decorah area.

Those who are looking to sell outdoor gear they no longer need will have two opportunities to drop items off at Wayside Park prior to the sale: Thursday, October 6 from 4-6 PM and Friday, October 7 from Noon-6 PM. The seller will set the price or can take the advice of coordinators. If an item sells, the seller will receive 70% of the sale price, 20% will benefit Decorah Parks and Recreation, and 10% will go towards administrative costs. All items must be brought to one of the gear drop-off times. Unsold items must be picked up on Sunday after the event or will be donated.

Free Introduction to Pickleball Classes – Oct 6

Decorah Parks & Recreation and local pickleball enthusiasts are hosting free introduction to pickleball classes Thursday, October 6th at the Decorah City Tennis Courts. Classes are free and open to the public with two time slots to choose from. The morning class will run 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the evening class will run 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Both classes will be identical, and will focus on basic pickleball instruction and score keeping. Registration is not being taken for these classes; participants should show up at the courts at their preferred class time. Participants are encouraged to bring their own paddle and ball. Limited equipment will be available for those who do not have their own. Come explore your favorite vehicles including police, fire and emergency vehicles, construction equipment, farm equipment, tow trucks, and city maintenance equipment. A free hot dog lunch will be provided by the Decorah Fire Department. This event is co-hosted with the Decorah Fire Department in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week and volunteers are provided by the Decorah Rotary Club. No registration required, just show up!
