Community Forum: April 10, 2025, 5-6 pm


Decorah Mayor, Lorraine Borowski, and Jim Martin Schramm, chair of the Decorah Sustainability Commission, are convening a Community Forum from 5-6 pm on Thursday, April 10, in the City Council Chambers.

The first portion of the hour-long meeting will provide an opportunity for members of the Decorah community to meet the new President of Luther College, Brad Chamberlain.  President Chamberlain will share remarks about Luther’s relationship with the City of Decorah and the key initiatives his administration will pursue in the years ahead.

The second portion of the community forum will feature a presentation by Regional Planner Michelle Barness (Decorah Sustainability Commission, Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission).  She has been engaged in discussions with local child care providers about the state of child care and needs and opportunities for the future.  Child care is a social, economic development, and workforce issue.  Human resource managers from many of Decorah’s largest employers have been invited to attend.

The meeting is open to the public.

Work on Quarry Street will begin on March 31

Work on the east half of Quarry Street will begin March 31 with removal of existing pavement .  Skyline crews will grade the base one-lane at a time to provide local traffic access to residences and Dunning’s Spring Park on a gravel surface.  Work is expected to last 2-3 weeks pending weather. Access to Kwik Star’s north driveways will not be affected except for transition work at the NE exit in week 2 or 3.  Quarry Street will be closed to all traffic for one day while the East half is paved, date to be determined.

Work on the West half will begin after the east half is paved.  Quarry Street will be closed at College Drive during W 1/2 construction, although Kwik Star will allow local traffic to transit through the their facility for access to residences and Dunning’s Spring Park.  Work on the west half involves full-width grading and asphalt paving.  The project is expected to be complete by the end of May.

Local traffic parking on Kwik Star property is prohibited.

City of Decorah Archery Range Grand Opening!


Decorah, IA (March 24, 2025) – Decorah Parks and Recreation invites you to celebrate the Archery Range Grand Opening on Saturday, April 5 from 12-3 PM at Will Baker Athletic Fields.

Join us for food and refreshments, the inaugural “first arrow” by Mayor Lorraine Borowski, participate in an opportunity to win a Grizzly Drifter 12 cooler and gift cards.

Special thanks to Sam Lewey (Toppling Goliath) and Andrew Nielsen (Xpedition Archery and Anthem Archery) for teaming up on this endeavor with Decorah Parks and Recreation staff.

This event signifies community involvement and partnerships that contributed to the project.  We look forward to dedicating this amenity to the community for recreation, programming and engagement with the outdoors.

Now Accepting Applications for Host Sites with Decorah’s Public Parklet Program

 

Decorah, IA (March 19, 2025) – The City of Decorah is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Public Parklet Program. First launched in the fall of 2024, this initiative continues to enhance downtown spaces, providing vibrant, accessible outdoor seating areas that support local businesses and foster community engagement.

The Public Parklet Program is a collaborative effort involving the Downtown Decorah Betterment Association, the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, and Decorah’s Self-Supporting Municipal District. Together, these partners have worked to reimagine the use of public spaces, creating inviting environments that benefit residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

Businesses and organizations interested in participating are encouraged to submit an application. The program provides an opportunity to extend seating and activity areas into designated on-street parking spaces, enhancing the downtown experience while supporting local commerce.

Applications and detailed program guidelines are listed below. The deadline for submissions is April 18th.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING – CITY OF DECORAH – PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX LEVY

FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2025-JUNE 30, 2026


The City Council will conduct a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year City property tax levy as follows:

Meeting Date: April 7, 2025

Meeting Time: 5:00pm

Meeting Location: Decorah City Hall – Council Chambers

At the public hearing any resident or taxpayer may present objections to, or arguments in favor of the proposed tax levy. After the hearing of the proposed tax levy, the City Council will publish notice and hold a hearing on the proposed city budget.
